The Inspiring Story of Thomas Edison: Overcoming Failure and Achieving Success with the Electric Light Bulb

In the late 19th century, Thomas Edison, an American inventor, was on a mission to create something that would change the world: the electric light bulb. During that period, people used gas lamps and candles among others, as sources of light which were both unsafe and unsustainable. Edison thought about a better form of light which he felt was electricity because it did not pose a threat in terms of fire breakout as was the case with oil.

Edison and his team of researchers undertook a lot of trial and error in his laboratory which was based in Menlo Park, New Jersey. They tried over six thousand substances in their hunt for the filament, better known as the hot wire or lamp – the component of the bulb that glows once an electric current runs through it. They tested metal wires, carbon, and even plant fibers but were still unable to find a solution. The filaments would burn out quite soon, or the light it produced was inadequate for use.

Time flew by and Christmas turned into a new year and the new year into another year. A lot of people, including some of his friends and partners, started to question the feasibility of Edison’s vision. Many people criticized him and called him a fool since inventing a workable electric light was out of the question. During this time even his own teammates lost faith in him. However, Edison did not sink out of the game or give up on his project. He has that entrepreneurial mindset where he focused on his vision and most of the time he never quit even when things went wrong.

One evening, after spending much of his efforts and resources trying different approaches and methods, Edison was sitting in front of his lab with yet another broken and burnt-out filament. He could perceive the tinge of disappointment within him, but he also realized that with each attempt, he was inching one step forward. Understanding that he could no longer persevere in this method, Edison had no other choice but to change his ways. He chose very thin carbonized bamboo fiber as a filament and then placed the filament into the bulb meticulously.

Edison and his team all held their breath waiting to see what would happen when they flipped the switch. As much as they were surprised, the bamboo filament began lighting up. Besides, it burned for hours remaining alight for far more time than any previous efforts were able to achieve. Edison had finally invented it — a light bulb that was long-lasting and usable in practical application.

The invention of Thomas Edison brought a dramatic change in the world and has benefited society in numerous ways. This paved the Way for electric lighting in homes, streets, offices, and other buildings, thus revolutionizing people’s lives and various industries. The electric light bulb exemplified a successful innovation and progression of technology.

The invention process of the light bulb proved to be quite challenging for Thomas Edison as he experienced failure and setbacks. Nevertheless, these failures did not stop him and he continued to strive. He did not regret the loss but rather saw them as part of the learning process and experiences to enable him to achieve his dream.

Thomas Edison on his invention once expressed, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work,” which defines the inventor’s spirit. He knew that rejection is also a reality of life because no successful person gets up in life without passing through one or more rejection points. The attitude of success doesn’t rely on the number of failures that we encounter in life, but on the number of times we face those failures and rebound.

From the invention of the light bulb, we can learn that nothing is impossible if we really want something and we refuse to admit failure. It helps to remember that each failure that people face can actually be a chance for a transformational process. From this perspective, reflecting on the challenges and barriers that life throws at us, we should always recall this story of Edison and go forward as persistently and optimistically as he did.

In the case of Thomas Edison and his quest to invent the electric light bulb that can be used in homes and commercial buildings, persistence remains a valuable lesson. His passion and determination to succeed at creating the electric bulb did not wane even when he had tried numerous times and lost hope, and this led to one of the greatest human inventions.

The story of Edison is an inspiring story that motivates people to chase their dreams no matter what because, if Edison can create such an empire, anyone can do it through hard work and determination.
