The reason why most people stick to using familiar products is because it is easy and comforting, and switching can prove to be daunting. However, personal growth usually involves taking a risk and moving to the zone of comfort in order to develop. Doing activities such as taking up other tasks at the workplace, considering new hobbies, or making new friends can enhance self-esteem and success perceptions.
Steps to get out of Comfort Zone
1. Proceed gradually
Attempting something different can be very intimidating. It can be even more terrifying when you see veteran performers and feel pressured to match their skill level from the beginning! To address this issue, divide a new task or project into multiple small steps.
2. Think of the worst that can occur
Self-confidence like any other virtue, cannot be acquired overnight. To get to confidence, one takes a step that affirms courage and then works hard to stay there. It is in such moments and concerning something that is out of your comfort zone that one can ask, ‘What if I do this?’ Perhaps it is merely that you lose your comfort for some time or bounce. You can then go on and ask, “What is the opposite of this?”—and if it is a good outcome that makes you happy, then do it!
3. It is recommended to start small to develop good habits
A good advice is to begin with something simple. The brain structure is therefore chemically wired to avoid wastage of energy as much as possible. The demand for effort that is not too big can easily elicit the willingness of it from the brain since it now knows that the task is not too large.
The result is the activation of the reinforcement system where the word motivation is used when the task is accomplished. There are always some signs of motivation in the brain; this is a good time to put ink on habits or bring on new actions.
4. Assess your willingness to take risks
There are two methods to tackle this. One option is to fully commit and dive in headfirst. Another method involves gradually moving forward and acclimating to the situation. Before choosing the most suitable approach for you, assess your risk tolerance, establish a support system, and determine which approach will result in greater perseverance from you.
5. Search for a mentor to imitate
Consider someone you look up to and who is fearless, then mimic their behavior. No matter how many motivational quotes you tell yourself, they will never be able to launch you forward like a catapult. You simply need to take action, visualize yourself taking action, gain experience from it, achieve success, and continue moving forward. It’s fine to start slowly and test the waters, but once you feel comfortable, dive right in.
6. Spend time with people who exude confidence
Doing everything possible to mix with confident people and entering into their space will challenge the subconscious to take risks and also help breed confidence in the minds of those who are timid and withdrawn.
Expanding from the comfort zone gives you different experiences and new tools for you to acquire and retain as you progress to the growth zone.
And remember, every journey is made with that first step.
